What is Ultima-NAD+?

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is an important coenzyme found in cells. It plays a role in transferring electrons in redox reactions between molecules.
NADH is the reduced form of NAD+, so NAD+ is the oxidized form of NADH.
Cells synthesize NAD+ from nicotinamide, a derivative of vitamin B3 (niacin). Nicotinamide combines with ribose and ADP to form NAD+. Addition of a phosphate group via an ester bond to the 2′ position of the adenyl nucleotide in NAD+ results in the formation of NADP+.
NAD+ and NADH:
Cells produce NAD+ from niacin and carry electrons in redox reactions. In this process, NAD+ gains an electron and a pair of protons, reducing itself to NADH and releasing a proton:
MH2 + NAD+ → NADH + H+ + M: + energy, where M is a metabolite.
Two hydrogen atoms (a hydride ion and a proton H+) are removed from the metabolite. The proton is released into solution. One of the electrons from the hydride is transferred to the positively charged nitrogen, and a hydrogen is attached to the carbon atom on the opposite side of the nitrogen.
The reduction potential stored in NADH can be used in ATP production through aerobic electron transport chain or in anabolic metabolism. ATP is a widely used energy source in cells, and the contribution of NADH to ATP synthesis energy is crucial under aerobic conditions. However, in the absence of oxygen (e.g., hypoxia), the regeneration of NAD+ from NADH is not sufficient to meet the cell’s ATP requirements. In contrast, glycolysis does not require oxygen but requires the regeneration of NAD+. The oxidation of NADH to NAD+ under oxygen deficiency is called fermentation.
